What is phonological awareness?

  • Phonological awareness: Noticing and playing with the words, rhymes, and syllables involved in everyday speech
  • Phonological awareness is an essential pre-reading skill.

Strategy #1: Encourage your child to pick up on sounds, syllables, and rhymes.

  • Read aloud to your child and choose books that have rhymes or repeated sounds.

Strategy #2: Focus on rhyming.

Strategy #3: Clap your hands to the “beat” to make syllables easier to understand.

Strategy #4: Get into guesswork.

  • Games like “I Spy” with sounds is one way to help your child practice phonological awareness.

Strategy #5: Singing is a great way to get your child rhyming.

  • You can find songs specifically made to develop phonological and phonemic awareness skills.

Strategy #6: Practice connecting sounds.

Strategy #7: Break apart words.

  • Start with breaking apart compound words.
  • Use legos to help make this point, breaking them apart to represent removing a part of the word.

Strategy #8: Use crafts as a method of hands-on learning.

  • Visit the original source listed below for examples of phonological awareness-developing craft projects.

Strategy #9: Do research online for more resources and ideas
